Yahoo Sports’ Jason Fitz, basketball analyst Isis ‘Ice’ Young and former Big 12 player of the year Marcus Morris Sr. discuss the Cougars’ mindset after shocking Duke in the national semifinal and now quickly moving forward to Monday’s championship game against Florida.
We all just witnessed Houston winning in improbable fashion in the Final Four in an epic finish.
But let’s be honest, they don’t raise banners for Final Four wins, right?
So now the question is I, how does Houston take this, put it in the background, and then focus on the game coming?
Yeah, I mean, I’m not sure what more momentum you could ask for than knocking out Duke and Cooper flag.
It felt like the whole country was rooting for the.
AP National Player of the Year to get a national championship rooting for John Shire.
So I feel like if you’re Houston, you come into this game with a ton of momentum and confidence.
My mindset as a player, job’s not done.
We got 1 more game to do.
We got 40 more minutes left.
Job is not done.
And listen, to piggyback off that they have a great coach, right?
and I know he understands the dynamic of like getting past that game like the ups of that game was like just insane, but having a coach that’s just like.
So like bought into his players and you can tell the way he he teaches them that he’s already saying listen that game is done the goal is not done right and we have a big one coming up and like that’s in the past we’d be able to watch that.
After we win the championship and I think that’s the message and I know mature guys, veteran team like they’re ready to play.
I mean, you mentioned veteran team I let’s let’s pay attention here to the opening introductions right when we meet the team, a lot of GR, a lot of graduate students on this Houston team, they’ve been here.
Yeah, and they’ve had close games all season, you know.
Storylines I looked out at when it was Duke and Houston matching up was Duke hasn’t had a ton of close games.
If it gets down to the wire, these young freshmen aren’t going to be ready for the moment, whereas in LJ choir, Jawan Roberts, fantastic and prepared for the moment and ready to rock.
Yeah man, LJ Cryer, first team all Big 12 like.
He stayed poised the entire game like we need to give him a lot of credit for hitting big big shots and like just having a guy like that you can go to and just like poise and keep the team kind of settled man, it’s big.
Because their offense was not flowing, he was the only hope down the stretch a little bit and then towards the end you saw Sharp start to feel a little bit.
Roberts got in on the action.
Isn’t there something guys though to the fact that they never panicked, even though I mean.
Again speaking to their their leadership they never panicked when their offense wasn’t working.
And that’s the part of like having veterans and having a connection to your coach.
If your coach panicked, more than likely right, you’re gonna be like, oh man, I don’t know like I always as a player in these terms of like the end of the game I always like try to find like one or two players where I can see that little crack and see that little like discourage right and they never had it like they.
Never had it in Florida and them are are almost the same.
It’s like it’s gonna be like a really, really, really good game, right?
And the thing about one seeds is you come into this tournament with high expectations.
You’re the one seed, so your goal is to get in here, win 6 games, and take the title home.
Nothing changes the fact that they’ve given us a great moment in sports, but much like the Miracle on Ice, which was not the gold medal game, Houston understands there’s still work to do.
