UCL Betting Analysis: PSG vs. Arsenal

Journey to the Champions League Semifinals: Arsenal

Injuries have plagued Mikel Arteta’s team all year, and as a result, Arsenal are a distant second behind Liverpool in the EPL. The Reds, in fact, just clinched the Premier League on Sunday with four matchdays still remaining.

Arsenal have been excellent in the Champions League, though, following up a 6-1-1 run through the league phase with dominant showings against PSV Eindhoven in the round of 16 (9-3 on aggregate) and Real Madrid in the quarterfinals (5-1 on aggregate).

Journey to the Champions League Semifinals: PSG

PSG has been much greater than the sum of its parts in its first season without superstar Kylian Mbappe.

Luis Enrique’s team is 20 points clear of Marseille in Ligue 1. More importantly for this Champions League-starved franchise, it got hot at the right time in European competition, thumping Brest in in a knockout phase playoff before squeaking past Liverpool on PKs in Leg 2 of the round of 16.

In the quarters, PSG notched a dominant 3-1 win in Leg 1, then survived a furious Leg 2 rally by Aston Villa to prevail 5-4 on aggregate.

PSG vs. Arsenal Lineup, Injury News

Arsenal are dealing with a number of injuries, including to standout center back Gabriel and top strikers Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz. This could have both Ben White and Mikel Merino back today, though, which would provide a huge boost. Both players missed the team’s most recent Premier League match: a 2-2 draw vs. Crystal Palace on April 23.

Arteta’s side will be missing key midfielder Thomas Partey to suspension today. In his absence, Merino — a natural midfielder who has had to fill in at striker in recent weeks — could join Martin Odegaard and Declan rice in the middle of the pitch.

If that happens, Leandro Trossard will start up top for Arsenal, flanked by Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka.

PSG, on the other hand, is light on household names (at least compared to the Mbabbe, Messi and Neymar days), but this is a deep, healthy squad with no holes.

Ousmane Dembele (7 goals, 3 assists in 12 Champions League matches this year), Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Bradley Barcola, Désiré Doué and Warren Zaïre-Emery give Enrique several dangerous options up top, while the trio of Vitinha, João Neves and Fabian Ruiz will pose a tough challenge for the excellent Arsenal midfield.

PSG’s back line of Marquinhos, Willian Pacho, Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes has been stout in UCL play (with the exception of a shaky stretch during Leg 2 of the quarterfinals vs. Villa). Hakimi and Mendes are also both outstanding at getting forward, with a combined six goals and six assists in UCL play.

PSG vs. Arsenal Best Bets, Player Props

Betting against Arsenal at home today is risky after what we saw from this side against Real Madrid. That being said, at the moment, PSG is much deeper and healthier, and I expect that to make the difference today.

With that in mind, take PSG Double Chance (win or draw) if you want to play it safe. A small play on PSG to win outright also makes a ton of sense at longer than 2-to-1 odds.

As for player props, Dembele has recorded eight shots on target in PSG’s last four Champions League matches. That makes him a tempting play to record 2+ shots on target at +245.

  • PSG Double Chance — Tie or PSG (-145 at DK) — 1 unit
  • PSG to Win (+240 at DK, FD, bet365) — 0.5 units
  • Ousmane Dembele 2+ Shots on Target (+245 at DK) — 0.5 units
