How to protect your family, home during severe weather

Now is the time to get ready for what could be a round of severe weather across western Washington Wednesday evening.

The batch of storms even has the chance of producing a rare funnel cloud. You will want to identify a safe room in your home in case of strong winds.

Puget Sound Energy is encouraging people to make sure your emergency kit is stocked up. It should include water, blankets, non-perishable food, medication, flashlights and portable chargers for your phone. Also unplug TVs and computers. and know which natural gas appliances will continue to work if the power goes out.

If you end up using a generator, be sure to follow instructions. Make sure none of the exhaust fumes can enter your home.

We talked with an arborist about what you can do to prevent damage to your home from trees.

“Pruning weak branches, removing dead wood and excessive end weight to reduce any breakage,” said Mike Lair from Seattle Tree Care.

KOMO News Meteorologist George Waldenberger said there is the chance in isolated areas for quarter to ping-pong ball-sized hail.

If you can find one, there are car covers made to protect your vehicle against hail damage.

You can also cover it with a tarp or blankets. That will at least reduce the risk of damage from hail.
