Hurricanes Fall 3-2 In Game 3 Double Overtime

The Carolina Hurricanes fell 3-2 in double overtime in Game 3 to the New Jersey Devils on Friday night at Prudential Center.

Despite a furious comeback in the third period to tie the game, the Canes just weren’t able to find themselves on the right side of what ended up being a one-shot game.

Off the bat, it was a poor start for the Canes, who once again were on their feet right from the jump.

Frederik Andersen managed to keep his team in it for a while, but the the Hurricanes still ended conceding the opening goal of the game as Devils captain Nico Hischier snuck behind Sean Walker for an in-alone look late in the first period.

The Hurricanes had a much better showing in the second period, but just weren’t able to muster enough offense to beat Jacob Markstrom and the Devils.

For one, New Jersey was constantly in the lanes, being credited with 33 blocks on the night.

To make matters worse, New Jersey struck again to open the third period, as Dawson Mercer tucked home a loose puck.

The initial chance was created by a great individual effort by Jesper Bratt who blew by Jaccob Slavin with a little shimmy.

Andersen made the initial save on Bratt, but he slid way out of position in the process (it also didn’t help that Brent Burns chased another Devil behind the net as opposed to going to the crease), thereby leaving the net wide open for Mercer to tuck it away.

However, Carolina wouldn’t go away and managed to get one back on a power play chance midway through the final frame as Seth Jarvis finished off a give-and-go with Sebastian Aho.

Then not too long after, it was Aho this time on yet another power play chance, slamming home a chance into the gaping net after Andrei Svechnikov dug the puck away from Markstrom.

The Canes stormed their way back to force overtime, but they just couldn’t generate anything in the extra frames.

They had to kill off two penalties and were outshot 12-3 after regulation.

Eventually, it was Simon Nemec, who was only playing in the Devils’ lineup due to injuries on the backend, that won the game for New Jersey.

He danced around Shayne Gostisbehere at the blueline and his shot barely squeezed through Andersen’s arm and then bounced in off of the post.

It’s yet another tough overtime loss for the Hurricanes, who have now lost six consecutive playoff games that have gone to multiple overtime periods.
