If you’re going to bury the truth, make sure it stays buried. Sony has released the first trailer for “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” a long-awaited sequel to Jim Gillespie’s 1997 slasher of the same name. Franchise mainstays Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. return to reprise their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson from the first two films.
“I Know What You Did Last Summer” is directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and co-written by Robinson and Sam Lansky, following an initial draft from Robinson and Leah McKendrick and based on characters by Lois Duncan. The film is the fourth installment in the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” franchise and will serve as a direct sequel to the 1998 original, in which a group of friends are haunted by a hook-handed killer one year after they killed a man in a hit-and-run accident.
Hewitt and Prinze Jr. star alongside franchise newcomers Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King, Billy Campbell and Gabbriette.
McKendrick and Robinson pitched the sequel in late 2022, with Neal H. Moritz returning to serve as producer. Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed that she was approached to return as Helen Shivers, but declined to do so because of how implausible it would be to retcon the character’s death.
Camila Mendes was originally slated to star, but left the project due to scheduling conflicts for Amazon MGM’s upcoming “Masters of the Universe” film. Principal photography for “I Know What You Did Last Summer” began in November 2024 with cinematographer Elisha Christian.
“I Know What You Did Last Summer” hits theaters on July 18. Watch the full trailer below:
