Iconic singer’s killer gets bad legal news in Texas

Yolanda Saldivar is staying in prison.

The woman sentenced to life for the shooting death of iconic Latin singer Selena Quintanailla-Perez back in 1995, was up for parole after spending 30 years behind bars. But the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles has reportedly denied that request.

“After a thorough consideration of all available information, which included any confidential interviews conducted, it was the parole panel’s determination to deny parole to Yolanda Saldivar and set her next parole review for March 2030,” the Board said in a statement.

Deadline reported that the Board explained that the brutality involved in the death factored into its decision.

Selena was just 23-years-old when she died.

Prosecutors said that Salvidar killed Selena because the Grammy winning singer was about to fire her for embezzling money. Salvidar has said that her .38 pistol accidentally discharged when the two met at a motel in Texas on March 31 of 1995, per The Post. Selena reportedly demanded that Salvidar turn over financial records.

Police said they found Salvidar sitting in a truck at the motel with a gun to her head.

Selena was already an icon in the Latin music community when she died, and The Washington Post reported that she was “on the brink of breaking into the English-speaking market” after winning a Grammy in 1994. Her murder was a major story across the country at the time.

Selena’s life-story was made into a movie — “Selena” — in 1997, and Netflix made a series, “Selena: The Series,” in 2020.

President Joe Biden posthumously awarded Selena the National Medal of Arts in 2023.
