Earlier this week a report emerged suggesting the Home Depot planned to start charging customers for parking next week.
Pro Tool Reviews, a legitimate website that offers coverage and insight on tools and gadgets, shared a “press release” from a Home Depot spokesperson named Tucker Lotman.
“Inflation has hit us hard, from supply chain costs to labor shortages,” Lotman said in the alleged press release. “By implementing a modest parking fee, we can avoid passing these costs directly onto our customers through higher prices on lumber, tools, and gardening supplies.”
The only problem?
There isn’t really a Tucker Lotman. At least not one that acts as spokesperson for the Home Depot. The press release was part of an elaborate April Fools’ Day post from Pro Tool Reviews, highlight by a hyperlink at the bottom of the page that led to another page explaining the joke.
The post even went into the weeds on how much customers would be charged for parking. “The parking fee structure will reportedly vary by location, ranging from $2 for up to two hours in central Florida to $5 for a full day of parking in Los Angeles,” it read.
Customers who wanted to get out of paying for parking would need to spend at least $250 in a single visit or be enrolled in the company’s loyalty program.
While Pro Tool Reviews admitted this was all part of an elaborate April Fools’ Day joke, the internet wasn’t exactly sure. “Home Depot parking” is one of the most trending topics on Google over the past 24 hours since the joke was first published.
Thankfully it doesn’t sound like the Home Depot will be rolling out a parking cost – at least not right now.
