Is this the face of the nine-day queen? Lady Jane Grey goes on display

Hers was a cameo in this island’s story, but one that is remembered by schoolchildren everywhere. Lady Jane Grey, the nine-day queen, is one of English history’s most unfortunate characters.

What some believe may be a “true” portrait of her face is going on display. English Heritage says it has “compelling evidence” that a picture being exhibited is of Grey, executed in 1554. The picture, which is on loan from a private collection, is back at its old home of Wrest Park, Bedfordshire.

“We are not saying we’re sure,” Peter Moore, the curator at Wrest Park, said. “But there are these intriguing signs. We think it’s really fascinating — it’s not a closed book on this one.”
