It’s Twice Upon a Time… in Hollywood for Brad Pitt

It is reported that Brad Pitt will reprise his Oscar-winning role as Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood stuntman Cliff Booth in an as-yet-untitled Netflix follow-up directed by David Fincher and written by the original movie’s writer-director Quentin Tarantino.

US entertainment trade publication Variety says it has confirmed the news, which was first reported by the film and television website The Playlist.

“It’s an especially unique production – not only because a high-profile director is helming a sequel to another high-profile director’s film, but also because of the property’s shift from a theatrical studio to a streamer,” says Variety.

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood was released by Sony Pictures in 2019, but Variety explains that Tarantino negotiated a deal that would see the copyright revert to him.

“Since this follow-up is being set up under Fincher’s first-look deal at Netflix, that likely indicates that sequel rights may already be privately retained by Tarantino,” it adds.

Another US entertainment trade publication, The Hollywood Reporter, has described the film as a “derivative” of the original movie rather than a sequel.

Pitt previously worked with Fincher on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Fight Club, and Se7en.

The actor had been cast in what was reported to be Tarantino’s final outing as a director, The Movie Critic, but the project was later scrapped by the filmmaker.

Fincher previously made the Michael Fassbender-starring The Killer and the Gary Oldman-starring Mank as part of his Netflix deal.

Netflix did not comment on the Variety report.
