The parental instincts of Jayson Tatum’s mom came out after the Celtics star suffered an injury scare in Boston’s Game 1 win over the Orlando Magic on Sunday.
Brandy Cole was none too happy that Tatum hurt his right wrist with 8:28 left in the fourth quarter following a hard drive to the hoop. Tatum looked to dunk a ball when Magic guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope came from the weak side and swiped at Tatum’s arm, causing him to lose his balance and land awkwardly.
The six-time All-Star stayed on the floor for a couple of minutes, grimacing in pain and clutching his wrist. Tatum, who had a subpar showing with 17 points on 8-of-22 shooting, stayed in the game after getting the area taped up, and Caldwell-Pope was assessed a flagrant 1 foul.
Tatum’s wrist was further examined following the contest and as he made his way to the X-ray room, a video caught his mother passing along a message to her son.
“Want me to go to the Orlando locker room?” Cole said, per SportsCenter.

Tatum shook his head no, but even if they are just being protective, Tatum’s family clearly didn’t like Caldwell-Pope’s actions on the play. With the clip going viral, it could create some tension and animosity between the two sides in the first-round playoff series.
It appears Tatum, who said the X-ray came back “clean,” avoided a serious injury, but he’s been hampered in the past by wrist ailments. And with the Magic boasting a physical defense, which allowed the least amount of points per game during the regular season, it could impact Tatum in a tougher-than-usual first-round matchup.
