In the wake of a French politician declaring that the United States should return the Statue of Liberty, Jimmy Fallon is proposing another international take-backsie.
“France wants the Statue of Liberty back, while Canada is like, ‘Well, in that case, we’re coming to get Ryan Gosling,’” Fallon joked on Monday night.
The demand to return the New York monument came from Raphaël Glucksmann, a member of the European Parliament as well as the co-president of the Place Publique party, a small left-wing party in France. He demanded that the gift be returned because Americans “have chosen to switch to the side of the tyrants.”
“It was our gift to you. But apparently you despise her. So she will be happy here with us,” Glucksmann said earlier this week (there is effectively zero chance that France will actually reclaim the Statue of Liberty; Glucksmann’s declarations are more of a statement of his and his party’s unhappiness over the Trump administration).
On Monday, Fallon also joked about Trump’s upcoming meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin. During the meeting, the two world leaders are supposed to discuss dividing Ukraine’s “assets,” Trump said.
“Trump was like, ‘He’ll take Ukraine, I’ll get Canada, we’ll alternate weekends on Greenland,’” the comedian said.
Fallon also treated audiences to a silly song tied to St. Patrick’s Day about which brands and people are and aren’t authentically Irish and speculated about Trump’s March Madness picks. During that bit, Fallon pulled out his Trump impression to say, “New Mexico will win, but only if it’s called New America.” Watch the full NBC monologue above.
