Kate Middleton returns to Irish Guards’ St. Patrick’s Day Parade after missing it last year due to cancer battle | Today News

Princess Kate Middleton made a celebrated return to the Irish Guards’ St. Patrick’s Day Parade in London, marking her first public appearance at the event after missing the event last year due to cancer diagnosis. The Princess of Wales, who serves as the honorary colonel of the regiment, was warmly welcomed as she joined the soldiers at Wellington Barracks.

The absence of Kate Middleton at last year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade was due to her recovery from an abdominal surgery in January 2023. Later that year, she revealed she had been diagnosed with cancer following the operation. After undergoing chemotherapy treatment, the Princess announced earlier this year that she is now in remission.

“It is a relief to now be in remission, and I remain focused on recovery,” Kate said in a statement. “As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal. I am, however, looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead.”

This year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade marked the first time Kate carried out the event solo as Colonel of the Irish Guards, a role she took on in 2023. In her previous appearance at the parade, she was joined by the Prince of Wales.

During the event, the Princess of Wales presented long service and good conduct medals to soldiers in recognition of their dedication. Before the parade, she also awarded operational medals to Irish Guards soldiers returning from deployment in Iraq.

Kate continued the tradition of presenting sprigs of shamrock to officers and guardsmen, a symbolic gesture tied to the Irish Guards’ history. She also took the salute during a march-past and met with veterans and junior cadets from Northern Ireland, known as Mini Micks.

The Princess spent time engaging with relatives of soldiers currently deployed overseas. She was also greeted by senior officers before heading to the Officers’ Mess, where she presented medals and posed for a group photograph with the Officers and Sergeants’ Mess.

For the occasion, Kate wore a gold shamrock brooch made by Cartier, which is traditionally loaned to her by the Irish Guards for the parade.
