The Red Sox made some noise with their offseason additions, and have some promising young talent within the organization.
There is a buzz around the team that hasn’t been there over the last few years. Just how good they’ll be this year after last year’s 81-81 finish be remains to be seen, but one baseball expert believes that they have the most talent in the American League.
Keith Law of The Athletic picked the Red Sox to win the AL East in his latest projections. He said the new additions are enough to make them contenders in the AL pennant race.
“They did more to upgrade their roster this winter than any other team in the American League, and they’ve made the right call at second base, giving Kristian Campbell the nod,” Law said. “On paper, I think they’re the best team in the AL, likely to lead or come close to leading the league in runs scored and be at or above the median in run prevention.”
The Red Sox were ninth in the league in runs scored last season, despite slugger Triston Casas being limited to 63 games.
Boston lost home-run leader Tyler O’Neill to the Orioles, but added a former Silver Slugger in Alex Bregman. Rafael Devers’s numbers were slightly down compared to his best few seasons. Campbell, the MLB Pipeline hitting prospect of the year, is expected to help add offense.
But, there are concerns about the Red Sox’ pitching staff, Law said.
“There’s some significant downside risk in that rotation,” Law wrote. “Garrett Crochet has had only one full season as a starter, Walker Buehler’s first year back from his second Tommy John surgery was not a success, and the guys who were supposed to be their next three starters are all going to start the year on the injured list.”
In total, Law picked the Red Sox to win 91 games, which trailed only the Braves, Mets, and Dodgers. He has the Yankees, who lost to the Dodgers in last year’s World Series, finishing fourth in the AL East with just 84 wins.
