Lakers Duo Made History on Monday, But It’s Not LeBron James and Luka Doncic

The Los Angeles Lakers have found their groove again. After a stunning loss against the Chicago Bulls in Windy City last week, the Lakers defeated the Memphis Grizzlies on the road on Saturday and took down the Houston Rockets at home Monday night.

The Lakers’ 104-98 victory over Houston was a product of the team’s balanced attack. Luka Doncic had 20 points while LeBron James added 16.

But not to be overlooked was the big contributions of Los Angeles’ second unit, particularly the pair of Dorian Finney-Smith and Gabe Vincent.

Finney-Smith and Vincent provided a huge shot in the arm of the Lakers’ offense with their excellent shooting from deep. The duo repeatedly torched Houston’s perimeter defense, as they hit six triples each.

According to StatMuse, Vincent and Finney-Smith “are the first pair of Lakers teammates with 6+ 3P each off the bench in the same game.”

Vincent shot 6-for-13 from behind the arc and finished with 20 points while Finney-Smith drained six of his 11 tries from the 3-point region on his way to a 20-point night.

Los Angeles seemed it took its 3-point approach a bit further than usual versus the Rockets. The Lakers are averaging just 36.2 3-point attempts per game so far in the 2024-25 NBA season but against Houston, they let go of 46 shots from downtown. However, it was also the sixth game this season in which they took 46 3-point shots or more. Their season-high was 52, which they recorded against the New Orleans Pelicans on March 4.

Looking ahead, the 46-29 Lakers will next square off against the Golden State Warriors on Thursday at Crypto.com Arena.
