The Los Angeles Lakers will host the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series on Saturday night, entering the postseason with high expectations and one of the league’s most formidable superstar duos.
Since being acquired from the Dallas Mavericks in a blockbuster midseason trade, Luka Doncic has revitalized the Lakers’ offense and is set to make his postseason debut in the Purple and Gold. The five-time All-Star has been nothing short of sensational, averaging 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game since his arrival in February.
But all eyes won’t be on Doncic alone.

LeBron James, the Lakers’ veteran leader, will once again take center stage as he continues to make NBA history. James, who completed his 22nd regular season, became just the second player in league history to reach 22 seasons—joining Vince Carter.
However, James is set to become the first to play in a playoff game in Year 22, according to Lakers reporter Mike Trudell.
The 40-year-old forward wrapped up the regular season with averages of 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists while shooting an efficient 51.3% from the field. This season alone, James added more milestones to his résumé, including becoming the oldest player in league history to score 40 points in a game—doing so in a win over the Golden State Warriors on February 6.
A postseason fixture for most of his career, James has missed the playoffs just four times in 22 years, and will now play in his third consecutive playoff series this year.
The Lakers, who were eliminated in the first round last year, are looking to go much deeper this time around with their retooled roster. With Doncic and James leading the charge, LA will aim to strike early and seize control of the series when they face a tough Timberwolves squad in Saturday’s opener.
