Draft City Music Fest gives a glimpse into Leicht Memorial Park’s future

Jesse Lin

As part of the city’s closing lineup of Draft City Music Fest, Rebelmatic rocked on stage to a small, but engaged crowd at Leicht Memorial Park.

Kids played a distance away, some taking photos with a newly-installed photo-op sculpture. Lawn chairs and picnic blankets were laid on the grass. The smells from food trucks wafted through the spring air.

It’s a scene that Green Bay hopes to continue at what’s historically been an underutilized park. The City Council in January approved a facelift for Leicht Memorial Park to keep it a bustling attraction with an entertainment pavilion, steps allowing access to the Fox River, and an amphitheater for performances.

Groundbreaking on the changes to the park will occur after the NFL Draft is over.

Soccer fans weigh in on the 2025 NFL draft

Ariel Perez

Alejandro Perez, a Green Bay Packers and Real Madrid fan, joined his friend Tito Roque at Casuals pub on April 26, 2025, to watch the Copa del Rey final after attending the NFL Draft. Perez praised the draft’s organization, calling it a great experience for fans and the community.

“They had everything covered down there,” he said. “I even noticed they had mother and baby stations.”

Perez attended the draft to collect autographs from Lukas Van Ness and Karl Brooks before heading to the pub for the soccer final.

“We wanted to watch this game really bad,” he said. “But we were there (at the draft) all three days.”

Zachary Michael Austin, a Chicago native now living in Green Bay, is a Chicago Bears and FC Barcelona fan. He said the friendly atmosphere at the draft made the experience enjoyable.

“I’m sure if this were done in Chicago, it would be totally different,” he said. “There would be a lot of elbowing and exclusivity.”

Austin expressed enthusiasm for hosting more sports events like the draft in Green Bay, citing the city’s strong fan culture.

“It’s a very blue-collar town, but when we are able to do things we do our best to show up,” he said.

Barryn Sorrell waited an extra day in Green Bay, and the Packers made his draft dreams come true

Ryan Wood

Barryn Sorrell had a decision to make when he woke up Saturday morning in Green Bay, where he’d wait to hear his name called since Wednesday.

The edge rusher from Texas watched Thursday’s first round of the NFL draft back at his hotel, where he saw the Green Bay Packers draft college teammate Matthew Golden with the 23rd overall pick. He sat in the Resch Complex green room Friday, hoping he might know his new NFL home by the end of the third round. When the night ended without a phone call, Sorrell considered returning home instead of extending his stay.

A draft slide can be tortuous. Sorrell knew he’d be the only prospect in the green room Saturday anyway. But he’s a pass rusher, and pass rushers never retreat. They’re always advancing, pushing on, persevering through whatever obstacles are in their path.

“I’m just so blessed and thankful that I made the decision to come back,” Sorrell said. “Because it couldn’t have turned out better.”

Jordy Nelson attended the Green Bay Distillery watch party on April 24

Ariel Perez

The Green Bay Distillery hosted a private watch party April 24 for the Green Bay Packers’ first-round NFL Draft pick in its banquet hall, attracting several hundred attendees, including former Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson.

“Jordy Nelson showed up and we had about 300 people watching the draft,” said Cassie Bone, manager of the distillery and restaurant.

Despite the event’s success, Bone noted that April 24 was not the week’s busiest day. The restaurant saw higher traffic April 25, which Bone attributed to inclement weather.

“Yesterday it was ‘crazy busy’ all day,” Bone said. “I think because of the rain and the cold, everyone wanted to be inside.”

On April 26, the distillery is experiencing typical business levels, with Bone suggesting the pleasant weather drew patrons outdoors.

“It’s so nice out, I think people want to enjoy the day out,” Bone said. “Maybe late at night it will get busy again.”

Special NFL Build-A-Bear lets kids build their own draft picks

Nadia Scharf

It’s a lucky draft day for Avery Parks and her brother, Owen: they’re getting their own Packers Build-A-Bears.

The stall, in Titletown, has bear-sized jerseys for every team (the Packers jerseys are just about sold out) and some teams’ mascots. Kids pick out a bear or bunny and have the “heart ceremony,” where they add a plush heart to give their new stuffed pet love, and some extra special football skills.

“Shake (the heart) by your muscles, so they can catch a touchdown. Shake it by your side, so they’ll stay by your side,” employee Morgan said. “Shake it by your hair so it doesn’t get helmet hair, shake it by your tummy so it likes stadium snacks.”

The Parks family has been at Lambeau since the bike parade this morning, mom Anna said. Getting a Build-A-Bear is their final stop for the day.

Packers fan to announce 226th draft pick in honor of Pat Tillman

Kendra Meinert

A lifelong Green Bay Packers fan with two therapy dogs and 7 million followers on TikTok will get his moment on the Draft Theater stage today.

Kevin Bubolz, who is originally from Stratford, will announce the 226th pick in the seventh round. The pick number is significant, because it’s the same pick Pat Tillman was selected with by the Arizona Cardinals in 1998.

Bubolz, an Army veteran, was chosen through the Pat Tillman Foundation’s partnership with the NFL. He’s a 2020 Tillman Scholar who earned his degree at the University of Minnesota with support from the foundation.

He’s known on social media for his popular @EllieGoldenLife account that features his two therapy dogs, golden retrievers Ellie and Emma, as they visit military troops, children’s hospitals and charity events.

For Petal Pusher, creating flower arrangements for ESPN’s draft broadcast was a special delivery

Kendra Meinert

The green and gold flower arrangements that have been getting a lot of national TV time as part of the ESPN’s set at the NFL draft are the work of Green Bay floral boutique Petal Pusher.

Nichole Campbell, owner of the Broadway District business, received a call from ESPN ahead of the draft requesting flowers to dress up the front of its broadcast desk outside Lambeau Field.

“Green and gold, of course,” she said. “They sent me a couple of photos from years’ past and some approximate dimensions and left the rest up to me.”

She tried to convince them that a Cheesehead filled with flowers would be the ultimate “only in Green Bay” touch, but they decided against it.

Campbell made the delivery to Lambeau herself, with the flowers then getting a ride down Lombardi Avenue in a golf cart to their destination.

Will the draft ever come back to Green Bay? City’s impact strong

Nadia Scharf

As the draft rolls into its last day, some people have been wondering whether Green Bay will see the draft again. For now, Jon Barker, the NFL senior vice president, wouldn’t say for sure.

“Let’s get through today,” Barker said, laughing. “On Monday, we’ll have that conversation.”

Right now, Barker said, the NFL brings the draft to cities that “may not be in the Super Bowl conversation.”

“The ability to bring an event of this size and this magnitude to those markets is really important to us,” Barker said.

Still, some things about Green Bay’s draft have stuck with league executives. Specifically, this morning’s bike parade, which riffs on a Packers training camp tradition. They’re already considering what kid-friendly events they could take to the 2026 draft in Pittsburgh next year.

“The idea of doing something Saturday morning with the community and the kids, it really struck home,” Barker said. “What we saw this morning with those kids coming out and riding those bikes was really special.”

Draft day 2 calmer than normal weekend, sheriff says

Nadia Scharf

(This post was updated because an earlier version included an inaccuracy.)

Despite the over 150,000 draft attendees on day 2, it was a calmer weekend than normal for the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Todd Delain said.

“Thanks to everyone for the last two days,” Delain said. “We have one more day, just be responsible, get here early and have fun.”

There was one citation for a low-level offense, but no arrests, Green Bay Police Chief Chris Davis said. There was one major car accident downtown, but it was unrelated to the draft. Traffic overall has been better than expected, Davis said.

Davis did warn people not to fly drones overhead — violating the temporary flight restrictions may lead to federal consequences.

The Green Bay Metro Fire Department took five people to the hospital on day two, Chief Matthew Knott said. He reminded people on day three to prepare for the sun and sit when needed.

The city and the NFL are urging people to get here early if they’re planning to attend the concert tonight. They’re anticipating a large crowd, and some people will end up sitting in Lambeau.

“Come early, enjoy it, take in the sights,” Delain said. “It’s going to be absolutely wonderful.”

Bike parade draws crowd before draft opens for the day

Nadia Scharf

At 8 a.m., bike after bike soars by bright and early on the last morning of the draft. It’s the kids’ bike parade, a tradition usually reserved for Packers training camp, a tradition which dates back to 1958.

Packers CEO Mark Murphy, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Packers alumni Nick Barnett, Tramon Williams and Nick Collins joined the kids for the ride.

Hundreds of kids are spending their morning at Lambeau. There are definitely more kids here now than at training camp, staff said. And with the sun shining, it’s a great way to start the day.

“The kids are just so happy,” one employee said. “It’s so exciting.”

Bridget Opgenorth’s two kids, Vance and Neve, biked the parade before their day in Titletown. They bike at training camp every year, and Opgenorth’s husband, Steve, has been biking since he was a kid.

Neve, 5, said she liked it, “but it’s too cold,” she said from under her gold Packers helmet. “I gotta get in the sun!”

Now, as the draft gets ready to open, it’s time for the Opgenorths to grab breakfast.

Looking for parking? Here is what we learned

Jeff Bollier, Ariel Perez, Benita Mathew and Scott Venci

The family-heavy crowd expected at Lambeau Field for the NFL Draft’s final day will find ample parking at much cheaper prices than the $75 to $200 property owners originally sought.

Visitors to the NFL draft can find parking for $25 to $100 just a short walk from Lambeau Field, a boon for fans but a disappointment for property owners hoping to earn more from the event. With many arriving by buses and shuttles, by 7 p.m. April 24, homes south of Lambeau Field on Morris Avenue and north on South Ridge Road were charging as little as $25 for parking.

On April 25, prices dropped to $20-$30 along Morris Avenue east of Holmgren Way. A few property owners lowered prices from $100 or $150 to the $40 to $50 range south of the Titletown District and within eyesight of an NFL Draft entrance on South Ridge Road.

But even homes that had drastically lowered their asking price down to $50, right around the price for Packers home games, still couldn’t get the few vehicles driving through the neighborhoods near Lambeau to pull in.

Local public safety agencies expect to spend more than $2 million to keep the community safe during the NFL draft. Between the Green Bay Police Department, Green Bay Metro Fire Department, Ashwaubenon Public Safety Department and Brown County Sheriff’s Office, the bulk of the expenses will be from the increased police presence at the draft and throughout the county.

Fans will go through airport-level security to enter the draft campus and the NFL’s clear bag policy will be in place. Umbrellas, alcohol, footballs and noisemakers are among the prohibited items.
