Mariners Game #17 Preview: 4/15/25, SEA at CIN

Luis Castillo takes the mound for the Seattle Mariners as they begin a road trip and a three game series with a stop at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, La Piedra’s former home before coming to the Pacific Northwest. An injured M’s roster looks for some infield help in the form of Ben Williamson, the #15 ranked Seattle prospect by this site. Williamson will make his debut with a start at third base, and on Jackie Robinson Day. You don’t have to look back too far for the last Mariners prospect to make a debut on Jackie Robinson Day, as the last one to do it was the now departed Jonatan Clase, debuting last year.

Mariners call up 3B Ben Williamson to fortify injured infield

Lineups:

It’s a right-handed heavy lineup tonight with an opposing lefty on the mound in Nick Lodolo. Dylan Moore gets the leading off honors, getting the start in right field. Garver gets catching duties with Cal taking the DH spot. Raleigh is one of two switch hitters in the lineup along with Leo Rivas, who will be getting the start at second base. Batting eighth in his debut is Ben Williamson, and the lone lefty starter in the lineup is Crawford, providing anchor.

Series Preview: Mariners (8-8) at Reds (8-8)

Before the lineup from Cincinnati came the roster moves, including optioning old friend and former Mariner’s prospect Noelvi Marte.

Activated today and immediately making starts in the lineup are Matt McLain, batting second and starting at second base, and Austin Hays, batting fifth in the DH role.

1996 – In the first meeting with the Angels since the 1995 AL West tiebreaker, the Mariners post their greatest comeback in team history. Trailing 9-1 vs. California in the fourth inning, the Mariners rallied to tie the game at 10-10 on Russ Davis’ three-run double in the seventh. Jay Buhner drives in the game winner in the eighth inning in an improbable 11-10 win.

· 1997 – Mariners first baseman Paul Sorrento goes 5×5, tying a club record and setting a career-high in hits. Seattle wins 8-4 at Cleveland.

· 1998 – The team snaps a seven-game skid with a 5-3 win at Cleveland. The game features benches clearing on back-to-back pitches with Randy Johnson getting tossed.

· 2009 – On Jackie Robinson Day, Ken Griffey Jr. hit his first home run at T-Mobile Park since returning to the Mariners. It was also Griffey’s 400th home run as a Mariner and his 613th overall. Also became the only player in ML history to hit 400 or more home runs with one team and 200 or more with another team.

· 2012 – On Jackie Robinson Day, all players wore #42 for the fourth consecutive season. Blake Beavan earned the win allowing three runs in 7.0 innings, while not walking a batter. Justin Smoak and Brendan Ryan each hit home runs in the win.

· 2015 – The Mariners were dealt a 5-2 loss vs the Dodgers and were swept in the 3-game series at Dodger Stadium. Both teams wore #42 in the annual Civil Rights Game on Jackie Robinson Day…Nelson Cruz homered in his 5th consecutive game to set a career high…Marks the 2nd-longest homer streak (tied) in club history (Griffey – 8G) and longest since Alex Rodriguez in 1999.

· 2017 – The Mariners shut out the Rangers 5-0 as James Paxton tossed 8.0 shutout frames, extending his scoreless inning streak to 21.0, the longest to start the season in Mariners history.

· 2021 – Mariners win both games of double header against the Orioles. Marked the second double header of the four-game series.
