Mario Kart Goes Open-World With Mario Kart World

The Nintendo Switch 2 Direct is happening Wednesday morning, and the first game shown was the newest Mario Kart game. Mario Kart World takes the racing experience but gives it an open world to race through.

Racing in an open world has been done many times in games such as Burnout Paradise and Forza Horizon, but it’s a first for the Mario Kart series. The game lets players race in huge areas and big races featuring 24 racers.

As is the case with each new Mario Kart game, there will be new characters to race with, new vehicles to drive, including trucks, and new abilities. For Mario Kart World, players will be able to grind on rails and seemingly jump off of walls.

Mario Kart World will be a Switch 2 exclusive, meaning this won’t be released on the original Switch. It’s the first completely new Mario Kart since Mario Kart 8, which was first released on the Wii U in 2014 but was repackaged — to huge success — as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Switch.

Nintendo plans on having a Nintendo Direct stream just for Mario Kart World on April 17. The show will give more specifics about the game that weren’t shown in the Switch 2 Direct.
