Michael Bolton Shares Major Health Update and Subtle Signs His Family Missed Before His Diagnosis

Michael Bolton has broken his silence about his battle with cancer.

The Grammy-winning singer was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2023 and underwent emergency brain surgery that December.

Glioblastoma is a fast-growing and aggressive form of brain cancer that originates in the brain’s supportive tissue. It’s known for its high recurrence rate and is difficult to treat, often requiring surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

While treatment has impacted Bolton’s memory, speech, and mobility, he and his family remain resilient in the face of adversity.

“You’re reaching into your resources and your resolve in a way that you never would have thought,. Succumbing to the challenge is not an option. You’re really quickly drawn into a duel. I guess that’s the way you find out what you’re made of,” Bolton told People.

Doctors were able to fully remove the brain tumor during Bolton’s initial surgery, but an infection led to a second operation in January 2024. He completed radiation and chemotherapy by October.

He now undergoes bi-monthly MRIs to monitor for recurrence, and his most recent scan earlier this month came back clear.

His family first noticed something was off during a night of bowling in the fall of 2023, when he kept bowling out of turn—once, then again, and again.

“That was when we were like, ‘Something’s wrong with his brain,'” his daughter Taryn, said.

Earlier that evening, he had also fallen out of his chair—an unusual occurrence for someone as athletic and sober as he is.

“Everything that happened was weird for him but not super alarming. When you look back at everything together…We missed so many things.”
