‘Miscarriage of justice’: CBS analyst incredulous that North Carolina gets in NCAA Tournament over Indiana basketball

How egregious of a mistake is North Carolina’s inclusion in the NCAA Tournament over Indiana and West Virginia?

Jon Rothstein, a passionate (to say the least) college basketball analyst for CBS, posted online Monday about the “miscarriage of justice” in that decision. He barely took a breath in his one-minute explanation.

In the accompanying clip, he says: “If the criteria for the NCAA Tournament, in terms of getting an at-large bid, is to beat other NCAA Tournament teams if you’re on the bubble, how in the world could North Carolina get an at-large bid over Indiana and over West Virginia?”

Rothstein notes IU‘s wins at Michigan State and over Purdue, and that the Hoosiers have no Quad 3 or 4 losses. He also notes West Virginia wins at Kansas and over Gonzaga, Arizona and Iowa State.

North Carolina has one win over a tournament team, UCLA. It lost to Duke three times, and Kansas, Auburn, Michigan State, Alabama, Florida, Clemson and Louisville.

“North Carolina is in over those two teams?” Rothstein said. “I’m just waiting for somebody to say, ‘I’ve got some swamp water to sell you in Florida.'”

The Hoosiers declined other tournament bids as they search for a coach to replace the outgoing Mike Woodson.
