National championship keys & picks – Florida vs. Houston

Yahoo Sports’ Jason Fitz, basketball analyst Isis ‘Ice’ Young and former Big 12 player of the year Marcus Morris Sr. look ahead to Monday night’s title game between two teams who have been ranked amongst the best in the nation all season long.

The men’s championship final is set.

We have Houston taking on Florida, and we’ve got to break it down.

I.

Give me your key to the game for Houston.

Well, with the way that Walter Clayton Jr. has been hooping in the tournament, back to back 30 point games for Houston, it has to be to limit him, and I don’t think you’re going to get a.

Game in which he doesn’t score more than 20 points, but limit him in terms of not allowing him to have easy looks.

He shouldn’t have wide open layups at the basket and then pick and roll coverage, I would have double him several times, especially early in the first half, get that ball out of his hands.

Um, I think my key would be Houston needs to get off to a better start offensively, right against Duke.

They were kind of slow.

The game kinda got out of range, obviously being a better team and coach really well, they was able to kind of withstand the run and keep it close, right?

But I think against this Florida team being so deep and being so offensively great, I think they need to start well offensively to stay in this game.

You say they got off to a kind of slow start.

That’s being generous, right.

So let’s look at Florida then I.

What’s the key for them?

Teo, tempo, tempo, tempo.

I felt like in their final 4 game, the one way that they controlled that second half of the game versus Auburn was just speeding up the tempo.

When they get out in transition, Florida is a tough team to guard.

I thought Richard, uh, Clayton Junior obviously pushing the ball with his hands, but Chinulu inside as well, when he’s running the floor, they are a different type of team, so they have to control tempo because Houston.

Wants to slow it down.

Yeah, exactly, but I think the biggest key is keeping Houston off the offensive glass.

I think they had 20 offensive rebounds against Duke obviously Duke still controlled that game, but if you have 20 offensive rebounds, you’re supposed to win, right?

Um, but the one thing about Florida is the depth at the bigs, so I like that they can kinda like throw them in and out and battle with uh Houston Biggs down low, but they have to keep Houston off the offensive glass.

All right, Marcus, give me your pick.

Listen.

I had Florida to win it all right and I and I I feel like I have to stick with that but I think it’s gonna be a really, really, really good game.

And I’m gonna switch my pick to Calvin Sampson and the Houston Cougars, man.

I’m, I’m gonna, I’m gonna, I’m gonna switch over.

I’m gonna, yeah, yeah, I, I either one I’ll win, right, but.

What that team showed me last night was just like off the charts, right, being down 6 points with 21 seconds to go, whatever time it was fighting, fighting, fighting and getting the opportunity to get Cooper Flag who’s been the best college player, right, one on one at the end and getting a stop like that.

Like I love that.

I love the way that Calvin Sampson kept them guys in it and it was one key part in the game when I think the guy reached over the inbounds, right, and he hit the ball and then we was like damn, that’s gonna be a big possession, right?

The way Kelvin Sampson didn’t explode like he, he just walked to him and he just talked to him and he kept him in the game right?

and that same guy got a tip back dunk at the end to put him down one and that just like to me that changed the game and I like took my head off to Calvin Sampson and how he kept his guys like ready for that moment.

Yeah, the story line with him having the chance to win his first national title and being 69 years old is cool.

He’s like the pop pop we’re all rooting for.

Uh, my pick is also Houston.

I just believe that they’re down with the defense.

They’re going to dictate through their defense, and it’s going to be tough for Florida to score the way that they want to, but this is going to be a good game.

I cannot wait to see the guard play between LJ Cryer, Walter Clayton Jr. is gonna be good.

Oh yeah, you mentioned it’s going to be a good game.

It’s also going to be a great home court advantage because they, everybody knows it’s coming.

The Alamo Dome is going to be stacked and packed with Houston fans.

It’s going to be epic.

Can’t wait to watch it.
