NBA game preview: Kings vs Magic at Kia Center | Sacramento Bee

Two teams that are fighting for play-in position in their respective conferences will square off when the Kings open a six-game road trip against the Orlando Magic on Saturday at Kia Center.

The Kings (36-37) are ninth in the Western Conference with nine games remaining after snapping a four-game losing streak with a 128-107 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday. They are a half-game ahead of the No. 10 Dallas Mavericks and 1 ½ games ahead of the No. 11 Phoenix Suns.

The Magic (35-39) is eighth in the Eastern Conference, a half-game behind the No. 7 Atlanta Hawks, 1 ½ games ahead of the No. 9 Chicago Bulls and 2 ½ games ahead of the No. 10 Miami Heat.

Here are three things to watch in Saturday’s game.

Jake LaRavia’s injury

Kings forward Jake LaRavia will miss his second game in a row due to a thumb injury.

LaRavia has been ruled out with a left thumb bone contusion, an injury that was initially described as thumb soreness.

LaRavia has quickly established himself as a key reserve since Sacramento acquired him in a trade deadline deal with the Memphis Grizzlies. In 19 games, he has averaged 6.1 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 0.9 steals while shooting 38.5% from 3-point range, providing a spark at both ends of the floor.

Defending Paolo Banchero

The Kings will have to find a way to contain Magic star Paolo Banchero, a 6-foot-10, 250-pound power forward who came out of Duke as the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA draft.

In his third NBA season, Banchero is averaging 25.9 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists. He is shooting 45.6% from the field, 32.8% from 3-point range and 72.4% at the free-throw line on 8.4 attempts per game.

Keegan Murray heating up

Kings forward Keegan Murray averaged 12.0 points while shooting 43.5% from the field and 32.2% from 3-point range in 52 games before the All-Star break.

Murray has been a different player in recent weeks after taking two games off to heal a nagging left ankle injury. Over the past 15 games, Murray has averaged 14.0 points while shooting 47.1% from the field and 40.2% from 3-point range on 6.8 attempts per game.
