NFL free agency: Grading Commanders’ trade for LT Laremy Tunsil

The Washington Commanders search for a left tackle is over — at least for a while. On Monday, the Commanders traded multiple draft picks to the Houston Texans for five-time Pro Bowl tackle Laremy Tunsil. The trade sent shockwaves around the NFL, as no one could believe Houston would trade a left tackle in his prime and not receive one first-round pick back in return.

Even better news for Washington: Tunsil is under contract for a reasonable amount for the next two seasons. The two sides could agree on a contract extension, considering how much space the Commanders currently have.

The move was widely praised across the NFL. What type of grade did Washington receive for the trade? Let’s check the grades, beginning with our grade and also others from across the NFL media world.

Commanders Wire: A+

How can you not love this move for Washington? Tunsil is a nine-year veteran but doesn’t turn 31 until August. That means he should have at least a few seasons of prime play remaining, allowing the Commanders to have an elite tackle as they continue to build the rest of the roster around quarterback Jayden Daniels. As for the picks given up, it always hurts to part with multiple picks. However, Washington kept its first two picks in the 2025 NFL draft and added a fourth-rounder while losing third-round and seventh-round picks. The Commanders will send second and fourth-round picks to Houston in 2026. That’s not an exorbitant price to pay for a premium position and for a player who will protect your greatest asset.
