Nick Frost is reportedly nearing a deal to play Rubeus Hagrid in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series, joining a growing cast that includes John Lithgow as Dumbledore.
News of Frost’s involvement in the long-awaited adaptation was first reported on Tuesday by Deadline, but fans have been speculating this past week following a recent cryptic social media post from the English actor that read, “What a bloody lovely day! It’s happening, it’s actually happening. Stay cool.”
HBO, however, has yet to give any official confirmation. “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation,” they said in a statement. “As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”
If casted as the beloved half-giant, Frost would join the cast with Lithgow, whose involvement was confirmed last month. Additionally, Paapa Essiedu and Janet McTeer are reportedly in talks to portray Professor Severus Snape and Professor Minerva McGonagall, respectively.
As for the series’ three main characters — Harry, Ron, and Hermione — it’s expected that newcomers will be cast, with HBO putting out an open casting call for kids aged between 9 and 11 last fall.
The television adaptation was first announced earlier this decade, and will faithfully tell the story of each of the seven novels, likely over the course of seven series.
J. K. Rowling, the original author of Harry Potter, will serve as executive producer, despite her recent controversies regarding her statements against trans people. In a statement, the network said Rowling “has a right to express her personal views,” and that the series “will only benefit from her involvement.”
As for Frost, he became internationally celebrated for his involvement in Edgar Wright’s Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy alongside Simon Pegg. This year, he’s set to appear in the upcoming live action remake of How to Train Your Dragon.
