PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A stronger-than-normal geomagnetic storm continues to keep Portland’s aurora borealis potential elevated Wednesday night.
Wednesday’s night northern light potential isn’t expected to reach May 2024 status, but a chance to see them still remains. Cloud-free skies will give much of the Pacific Northwest the upper hand at potentially seeing this astronomical event shortly after sunset.
Staying clear of city lights and looking towards the northern horizon will elevate your chance of seeing these lights. The geomagnetic activity is expected to be at its strongest around sunset for the west coast. Waiting for the dusk glow to fade will make potential sights more visible.
If you happen to capture any photos or videos of Wednesday night’s northern lights, you can share them with the KOIN 6 Weather Team here.
