Nottingham Forest overcome Brighton to progress to the Emirates FA Cup semi-finals

Nottingham Forest held their nerve from the spot once more to book their place in the Emirates FA Cup semi-finals as they overcame Brighton 4-3 on penalties.

Forest, who have beaten Exeter City and Ipswich Town on spot-kicks in the previous two rounds, made it three on the spin with goalkeeper Matz Sels the hero once more.

The Belgian stopper kept out Jack Hinshelwood and Diego Gomez during the shootout before Ryan Yates scored the winning penalty as Forest booked a spot in the last four for the first time since 1991.

Neither side had been able to find a breakthrough in a goalless 120 minutes, Morgan Gibbs-White coming closest for Forest with a fizzing effort from distance while Gomez saw Brighton’s best chance tipped over by Sels.

Forest ran out 7-0 winners when these sides met in the Premier League in February but their latest encounter got off to a cagey start on the south coast.

The visitors were first to force an opening, Taiwo Awoniyi – leading the line in the absence of the injured Chris Wood – seeing his effort kept out by the feet of Bart Verbruggen on 17 minutes.

Brighton grew into the contest and Yasin Ayari saw his effort from distance deflected wide before Pervis Estupinan tried his luck with a shot which was dealt with by Sels.

Gibbs-White’s teasing cross was just too far in front of Awoniyi at the other end while the half ended with Carlos Baleba firing a shot from 20 yards which flew narrowly wide.

The second period began with another long-range effort, Gibbs-White unleashing a swerving piledriver which was tipped over by Brighton’s Dutch goalkeeper.

Hinshelwood then spurned a good opportunity, heading wide when well placed from a corner, before a flashpoint midway through the second half.

Elliot Anderson went down under the challenge of Kaoru Mitoma and referee Peter Bankes pointed to the spot to award a penalty which was overturned on VAR review.

Forest stayed on the front foot and substitute Anthony Elanga was denied by Verbruggen after being played in by Gibbs-White.

A role reversal then saw Elanga slide in a cross towards Gibbs-White but the England international could not quite stretch to turn the ball home, colliding with the post for his troubles.

Murillo was picked out by Gibbs-White from a free-kick during eight minutes of stoppage time but couldn’t get enough on his effort to trouble Verbruggen as the stalemate continued, with the sides unable to be separated after 90 minutes.

Extra time was played out in a similar vein, with Gomez seeing a shot blocked by the impressive Nikola Milenkovic in the opening period.

The same player came close early in the second half of the additional half-hour, with his header acrobatically tipped over the top by Sels moments after the Paraguayan failed to make a meaningful connection to Simon Adingra’s whipped cross.

Adingra then saw a shot beaten away by Sels as Brighton injected belated momentum into the tie and they thought they had won it when Joao Pedro bundled home with two minutes to play, only for the flag to go up as Estupinan had headed the ball back across from an offside position.

It was left to spot-kicks to decide the outcome and Forest used all their recent knowhow to progress, with Sels keeping out consecutive efforts from Hinshelwood and Gomez.

That set up an opportunity for captain Yates to seal the deal and he sprinted the length of the pitch to celebrate with the travelling fans after emphatically picking out the top corner from 12 yards as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side continued their superb season.
