NWS issues air quality alert from Canadian wildfires for Sioux Falls

The National Weather Service on May 30 released a hazardous air quality alert for the Sioux Falls area.

Widespread wildfire activity from Canada and the Midwestern U.S. is “drifting through the Plains” enough to settle near the ground and reduce visibility through May 31 or until conditions improve. The air quality alert includes central, east central, south central and southeast South Dakota, and extends through Monday for all of Minnesota.

Beginning June 2-3, chances of precipitation and thunderstorms are in the forecast that could help lift the moderate density smoke, but some storms may be severe.

Temperatures are currently expected to be in the lower 80s on May 31, up to 90 degrees on June 1-2 and down to the upper 60s by June 3.

The 2025 South Dakota state track meet will continue at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls through May 31.
