Paige Bueckers scores 40 points at UConn but Geno Auriemma is not happy and brings up his issues

Paige Bueckers‘ head coach tries to reel in the UConn Huskies star after her impressive outing against the Oklahoma Sooners as Geno Auriemma points out the point guard still has work to do to improve her game.

Bueckers accomplished something that had never been done in UConn history on Saturday when she became the first player in organization history to put up 40 points in a March Madness game.

The talented NCAA hooper drove her team through the Sweet 16 match after they trailed at half-time and also added six rebounds and one assist for good measure, whilst going 59.3% on field goals and 75% on three-point efforts.

As a result, Auriemma, who has coached stars such as Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart, praised Bueckers‘ performance as the best he’d ever seen her play, before then changing his mind and adding faults.

“Did I really say that, that that’s the best I’ve seen her play? That came out of my mouth?” Auriemma joked, before adding his criticisms. “Well, that’s the most I’ve seen her shoot.

“And she was really bad defensively, so we can’t just let her off the hook that easily. We still got, hopefully, a couple more games to go before she gets canonized.

Last chance saloon for Bueckers?

Bueckers is destined to enter the WNBA at the end of the collegiate year and she’s demonstrating her talent perfectly to all of the watching professional teams as she climbs to fourth on the all-time points scoring list for UConn.

With a season stat line reading averages of 19.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game, the guard is making sure her final year counts and Auriemma revealed she truly knows it’s her last time in college.

“We see this every day at practice, right, Auriemma added. “Every day at practice there’s long stretches of exactly what you saw today.

“And little by little it’s dawned on her, I think, that there is no next year, there is no, you know, I can get this anytime I want.

“You’re going to have to get it now or it won’t be available anymore.”
