Parents seek answers after adult seemingly fails to intervene in West Potomac HS fight

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (7News) — Parents rushed to West Potomac High School Wednesday morning after word spread about a stabbing on campus. What started as a fistfight ended with a bloody scene in a hallway packed with students.

A 16-year-old boy had to be taken to a hospital and a 15-year-old boy was charged with malicious wounding.

“It’s kind of horrifying,” said Shelly Arnoldi, whose daughter is a senior at the school.

As parents were clamoring for answers outside the school, the presence of an adult inside who witnessed the fight is being questioned.

“There was a teacher there when they were fighting, but he just walked off,” said sophomore Daphne Nesselordt. “Why would a teacher just stare and then walk off?”

A video of the incident does not make it clear if the adult, who appeared to take a picture before walking away, eventually went to get help.

“There was a kid on the floor getting beaten,” said Arnoldi. “I know he didn’t know the severity, but it’s impossible to imagine that’s okay.”

7News asked the superintendent about the adult’s actions.

“It is never acceptable to walk by behavior that is dangerous,” said FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid. “What I will say is this whole situation is currently under investigation. We’ll be reviewing all the video, both the school video and law enforcement investigative details, and we’ll take any appropriate actions as necessary.”

“He should have said something, called someone,” said Arnoldi. “If he doesn’t want to jump in a fight, I get it, but he should have been making some noise.”

Three school board members also called for increased presence of resource officers at every middle school and high school in the county.
