Aubrey Plaza became concerned for her estranged husband Jeff Baena’s welfare months before his death, a medical examiner’s report has revealed.

Plaza, 40, who worked with Baena – a director and screenwriter – on films including Life After Beth and The Little Hours, separated from him in September 2024. The report states that in October, she became alarmed after he made “concerning remarks” and asked a friend to check on him.

Baena died by suicide in January at the age of 47.

“Baena had been attending therapy,” the report said. “According to (an unnamed person) Baena did not have any previous suicide attempts. He had a history of difficulty sleeping.”

The White Lotus actress “last knew her husband to be alive when he sent her a text message” on the morning of 3 January, the date of his death.

The director and screenwriter was found by a dog walker at a home close to the Fern Dell Nature Trail near the Hollywood Hills in the US.

Following his passing, Plaza and Baena’s family described it as an “unimaginable tragedy” and thanked those who had offered support.
