Carlos Alcaraz suffered a shock 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 defeat against Belgian David Goffin in the second round of the Miami Open which also ended his chance to move into second place in the world rankings.

World number 55 Goffin beat Alcaraz for the second time in their third meeting on Friday night.

Second seed Alcaraz, who had a first-round bye, committed 43 unforced errors five days after a straight sets defeat against Jack Draper in the Indian Wells final.

“It was a poor level from me,” Alcaraz was quoted as saying on the ATP website.

“I just wanted to play better. After the first set, I thought I was going to be better. He played well, he played good tennis. My level didn’t increase. I think his level after the first set increased a little bit.”

The 34-year-old Goffin was delighted about his second comeback win at the Masters event.

“It feels amazing. Sometimes some matches are tough and you have to fight, like the first round, and you’re happy to have a second round like that in a stadium,” Goffin said.

Alcaraz could have moved past German Alexander Zverev into second place in the world rankings by winning the title and Zverev going out early.

Australian Open finalist Zverev, who went out out early in Indian Wells, plays his first match later Saturday against Briton Jacob Fearnley.

World number one Jannik Sinner is not present due to a doping-rules related ban which runs until early May.
