BALTIMORE — Instant reactions from the Red Sox‘ 8-4 the Orioles on Thursday here at Oriole Park at Camden Yards:
1) Star rookie Kristian Campbell had a terrific road trip. He started his MLB career 10-for-24 (.417 batting average) with a .500 on-base percentage, .833 slugging percentage, 1.333 OPS, two home runs, four doubles, six runs, four RBIs, four walks and five strikeouts in seven games. He also signed an eight-year, $60 million contract extension.
Campbell homered in the second inning Thursday to put Boston ahead 4-1. It was a two-run blast that went 389 feet to left field and left his bat at 104.1 mph. Campbell also singled up the middle in the fourth inning.
2 ) Manager Alex Cora said when he speaks to Triston Casas in Spanish, he means business. Cora delivered a message to Casas in Spanish on Wednesday. He told the 25-year-old first baseman he was being too passive at the plate and he needed to be more aggressive. Casas — who entered Thursday’s game 2-for-21 with no extra-base hits — belted a 377-foot two-run homer to left-center field in the seventh inning to put Boston ahead 7-3. And he did it against a left-hander (Keegan Akin).
3) Tanner Houck went just 4-plus innings and allowed three runs, five hits (one homer) and two walks while striking out six. Command was an issue. In addition to his two walks, he also hit the first batter of the fifth inning right before manager Alex Cora pulled him. He threw 47 of his 82 pitches (57.3%) for strikes. He has allowed seven runs in 9 ⅔ innings (6.52 ERA) over his first two starts.
4) Alex Bregman belted his first home run as a member of the Red Sox. Bregman put the Red Sox ahead 2-0 in the first inning with a 397-foot home run that left his bat at 103.8 mph. He ripped a first-pitch 92.1 mph sinker from Charlie Morton and sent it over the wall in left field. He went 3-for-5 with a homer, two doubles, three RBIs and two runs. Bregman entered the game just 1-for-14 against Morton.
5) The bullpen did the job. Zack Kelly, Justin Wilson and Justin Slaten each pitched a scoreless inning. Garrett Whitlock pitched a scoreless eighth and allowed one run in the ninth. The four relievers combined to allow just three hits and one walk while striking out five in 5 innings.
6) Boston struck out 11 times, including 10 times against starter Charlie Morton. The Sox lead the AL in strikeouts with 75.
7) The Red Sox went 3-4 on their opening road trip, losing three of four games in Texas but then winning two of three games here in Baltimore.
8) Opening Day at Fenway Park is Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:10 p.m. Gates will open to fans at 12:10 p.m. Red Sox righty Walker Buehler (0-1, 8.31 ERA) is scheduled to start opposite Cardinals right-hander Erick Fedde (1-0, 1.50 ERA).
