Red Sox’s Jarren Duran Reveals Meaning Behind Gameday Messages

Mental health remains top of mind for Jarren Duran, including every game he takes the field for the Boston Red Sox.

Duran opened up about his mental health journey in Episode 4 of Netflix’s “The Clubhouse: A Year With The Red Sox,” which included an admission about a suicide attempt in 2022. The dialogue also featured ways the 2024 All-Star helps keep himself in a better headspace, such as daily journaling and gameday messages written on his wrists.

“On (the tape on) my left wrist, I write, ‘(expletive) ’em,’ because it’s me telling my demons, ‘You’re not going to faze me’,” Duran said, per ESPN. “And on my right wrist, I write, ‘Still alive’ because I’m still here and I’m still fighting.”

Duran received widespread praise for being so forthright about his battles with mental health, including glowing praise from Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy and MLB commissioner Rob Manfred.
