Key Facts

Reports of outages on Reddit began to spike around 2:40 p.m. EDT, and quickly shot up to around 35,044 people at around 3:15 p.m. EDT.

Most of the issues, 47%, were reported with Reddit’s app, and 42% were with the website, while just 11% of reports were tied to server connection, according to DownDetector.

Reddit reposted a post on X from a Reddit Status account that said it was “currently investigating this issue,” and the account said at 3:48 p.m. EDT it had implemented a fix and was “monitoring the results.”

DownDetector showed reports dropping around 3:45 p.m. EDT after Reddit said it had put a fix in place, but there were still more than 28,000 users reporting issues.

Reddit did not immediately respond to Forbes’ request for comment.

Key Background

Reddit has had slight usage issues during the first three months of the year, according to its status page, but no major incidents. In November last year, Reddit faced back-to-back outages in less than 24 hours, at least one of which it attributed to “a bug in a recent update we made.” In the first outage, more than 47,000 users reported issues before it was resolved, and then the next morning more than 76,000 users logged issues on DownDetector with both the app and website. Reddit addressed that on X at the time in a series of tweets, one of which used a popular meme format and another that read, “sorry sorry sorry.”

Tangent

The outage came just days after Meta’s Facebook and Instagram faced unrelated outages. On Tuesday, thousands of users reported issues with Instagram’s comments and app, and nearly 1,000 people reported issues with Facebook.
