Setting up for strong to severe storms tonight

  • Several rounds of storms are expected
  • Threat now through Tuesday morning
  • Quiet and windy for the rest of Tuesday

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – As we head into Monday evening across southern Wisconsin, conditions are becoming more favorable for several rounds of severe thunderstorms tonight and into early Tuesday morning. The culprit for this First Alert Day is an area of low pressure moving through Minnesota and northern Wisconsin, along with the cold front extending down into the central plains. Along with this strong low pressure system, temperatures out ahead of the system have risen into the upper 70s and low 80s this afternoon, helping to destabilize the atmosphere.

The first window for impactful weather could be between 4 pm and 10 pm, with the second round right behind it from midnight to 2-3 am. Severe thunderstorms will be likely, with all hazards on the table, including large hail, damaging wind gusts over 60 mph, and even a few tornadoes. Some of the hailstones could grow to over two inches in diameter, and while any tornadoes would likely be brief and rain-wrapped, the fast storm motions could make them particularly difficult to spot. Monday night’s storms will mainly arrive as a line (squall line), but there is still some potential for a few individual supercell storms to form ahead of it, which would have an even higher tornado threat if they materialize.

Now is the time to make sure you have the First Alert Weather App downloaded onto your device, or make sure the settings on your smartphone are set to receive severe alerts.

What comes next…

Rain and storms will quickly exit by early morning, setting us up for a quieter, cooler, and windy Tuesday with highs dipping back into the upper 50s and low 60s.

A look ahead…

After this current batch of storms, much calmer weather will build in through midweek. Tuesday and Wednesday will bring a much-needed break, with drier air, cooler temperatures, and sunshine returning to southern Wisconsin.
