Severe Weather Alert: NOAA Weather Radio Transmitters Offline

(Omaha/Valley) Residents in southwest and west central Iowa who rely on weather radios for severe storm warnings should find alternative methods to receive alerts, especially since storms are expected this afternoon.

The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Omaha, located in Valley, Nebraska, is performing a scheduled update to its Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) today through Wednesday. This system is essential for displaying and integrating weather and water data and disseminating critical information, such as warnings to the public.

All NOAA Weather Radio transmitters managed by NWS Omaha will be offline during this update. Individuals in the area relying on towers KIH Omaha, WXL-77 Carroll, KZZ-50 Essex, and KZZ-53 Hancock will not receive severe storm alerts. Residents are encouraged to utilize other sources for severe weather updates, including Radio and TV stations, mobile devices, wireless emergency alerts, weather apps on your mobile device, such as the FEMA or Red Cross App, outdoor sirens, and the NWS website at weather.gov/omaha.

Tune into KSOM or KS95 Radio for the latest severe weather updates.
