Should the Browns immediately take a QB tonight? I’m not sure – Terry Pluto’s NFL Draft Scribbles

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Morning-After Scribbles following the Browns’ huge first day trade:

1. Here are the basics of the deal: The Browns traded Travis Hunter (No. 2) to Jacksonville for Mason Graham (No. 5). The Browns also added picks No. 36, No. 126 and a 2026 first-rounder. That is a lot for dropping down three spots in the draft.

2. The Browns also sent picks 104 and 200 to Jacksonville in the deal. Along with Graham, the big parts of the trade are the No. 36 pick and especially the 2026 first-rounder. That gives the Browns two first-round picks in 2026. Remember, the Browns had zero first-round picks from 2022-24 because of the Deshaun Watson trade.

3. As I wrote Thursday, I didn’t like the trade and still don’t simply because I hate passing on a guy (Hunter) who I believe has a chance to be a great player. That said, the Browns can turn this into something that is a real boost to the franchise.

4. Let’s start with Graham, the defensive tackle from Michigan. The Athletic’s Dane Brugler rates Graham as the fourth-best player in the draft. Brugler loves Graham: “A leverage monster. Destroys blockers with strength, quickness and motor. Makes an impact vs. the pass and run.” Let’s face it, the Browns have generally had poor run defenses over the years and so-so (at best) defensive tackles.

5. Brugler’s three players rated in front of Graham: Hunter (No. 1), Abdul Carter (No. 2) and Ashton Jeanty (No. 3). What about top pick Cam Ward? He was rated No. 13. Here is how Brugler rated some other QBs: Shedeur Sanders (No. 34), Jaxson Dart (No. 49), Tyler Shough (No. 50) and Jalen Milroe (No. 73). Ohio State’s Will Howard was not in Brugler’s top 100.

6. ESPN’s Mel Kiper also likes Graham. Kiper wrote: “(The Browns) took my No. 3 prospect in Graham. He doesn’t have many ‘wow’ traits, but he’s an extremely good football player. I love his technique and power … The Browns are trying to reset, and Graham will help boost the defense.”

7. Now GM Andrew Berry indeed has a chance to restock his roster, which is older and on the expensive side. He has picks No. 33 and 36. I know some fans want a QB. Dart was my No. 2 QB in the draft – behind Ward. He went in the first round to the Giants. I would not use the No. 33 or 36 picks on a QB. I want a running back – Ohio State’s TreVeyon Henderson or Iowa’s Kaleb Johnson. How about a wide receiver such as Missouri’s Luther Burden III or Iowa State’s Jayden Higgins. LSU tight end Mason Taylor is interesting.

8. Maybe I am wrong on the wait-for-a-QB strategy. Maybe Sanders will turn out to be a viable NFL starter. I do think Milroe will drop in the draft and the Browns may find a way to pick him later on. Shough is intriguing to some NFL people whom I respect.

9. I think about what Berry said about wanting to add as many “good football players” as possible. This trade sets them up to do so. The second and third rounds are tonight. The Browns have picks No. 33, 36, 67 and 94. Lots of room to trade and add possible starters.

 10. The Browns need to concentrate on offense. They were the lowest-scoring team in the NFL last season. Even if this is a “rebuilding year” as it seems, they need to start building an offense with young talent. The only real playmakers they have on offense are Jerry Jeudy and David Njoku (if he can stay healthy).

11. It is always easier to add draft picks than make good draft picks. The theory behind adding picks is it gives you a better chance to find a good player. OK, Browns, you’re on the clock.
