Some of the most memorable moments on “Saturday Night Live” happen when comedians go off the cuff, but during the sketch show’s latest episode, it was the audience who hilariously flipped the script.
During the live “Weekend Update” segment on Saturday’s episode, cast member Ego Nwodim mocked the White House Correspondents Association’s decision to cut comedian Amber Ruffin’s performance from their upcoming dinner.
Switching into her alter ego, a 50-year-old stand-up persona named “Ms. Eggy,” Nwodim teased the audience that she could replace Ruffin before showing off the type of jokes she would bring to the table at the dinner.
At one point during the skit, Nwodim/Ms. Eggy jokes, “Cory Booker out here with his filibuster — shoot, I’ve had my fill of busters.”
Finishing off her joke, she then held her mic out to ask the crowd, “These men ain’t what?” prompting some of them to reply in unison, “Shit.”
The unexpected moment caught on the live broadcast left Nwodim shocked, but she rolled with the punches, quickly replying, “We finna get fined for that.”
She then revealed the response she was hoping for “worth a damn” as “Weekend Update” anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che laughed uncontrollably behind her.
“Y’all gonna have to pay for that. Lorne’s gonna be mad at y’all,” Nwodim added, referencing “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels.
The crowd’s profanity rebuttal slipped through the cracks on streaming but was muted during a rebroadcast, and the version posted on the show’s social platforms.
