Two rounds of Social Security payments will be made this week.
Why It Matters
The Social Security Administration (SSA) pays out retirement, survivor and disability benefits to around 70 million Americans every month. Payments are administered on a monthly basis and paid in one lump sum for most recipients.
What to Know
Retirement checks are distributed throughout the month, based on the recipient’s birth date and the duration of their benefit payments. Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which provides financial assistance to elderly, blind and disabled individuals with limited income and assets, is usually issued at the start of each month.
Two rounds of SSA payments will be made this week. The first will be paid on Tuesday, April 1, for all those who collect SSI.
The second payment will be made on Thursday, April 3, and is for anyone who has been collecting Social Security retirement benefits since before May 1997. Retirement payments to beneficiaries who also collect SSI will be made on April 3.
The SSA says you should wait three working days before contacting the government agency if a payment hasn’t arrived as expected. Federal holidays and weekends are not working days.

How Much Can I Get?
For retirement benefits, the SSA explains on its website: “The maximum benefit depends on the age you retire. For example, if you retire at full retirement age in 2025, your maximum benefit would be $4,018.
“However, if you retire at age 62 in 2025, your maximum benefit would be $2,831. If you retire at age 70 in 2025, your maximum benefit would be $5,108.”
For SSI the amount a beneficiary receives varies based on factors like income, type of disability, and how many people live in the claimants household. The maximum available for a single person for 2025 is $967, and $1,450 per month for a couple
Further Payment Dates for April 2025
More benefit payments will be made on the following dates this month:
- April 9: Benefits for those born between the 1st and 10th of any month.
- April 16: Benefits for those born between the 11th and 20th.
- April 23: Benefits for those born between the 21st and 31st.
What’s Next
The SSA is currently undergoing a wide range of changes due to recent executive orders issued by President Donald Trump.
The federal agency announced in February that it would be undertaking workforce reductions and closing certain internal departments. More recently, the SSA announced it would be making changes to its phone services, with over-the-phone identity verification due to be limited for millions of beneficiaries starting in mid-April.
