Storm downs trees and powerlines, as tens of thousands remain without power

Strong winds and heavy rain across the South Bend region left a trail of destruction, downing multiple trees, powerlines and causing severe damage to multiple structures.

No injuries have been reported, as a tornado watch that the National Weather Service to issued early in the day expired just after 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, Indiana Michigan Power and NIPSCO are both reporting tens of thousands of customers without power. Indiana Michigan Power was reporting nearly 41,000 customers without power as of 5:45 p.m., and NIPSCO was reporting about 34,500 customers without power.

Those numbers had by 7 p.m. risen to 60,000 Indiana Michigan Power customers and 36,000 NIPSCO customers.

There were also multiple reports of trees down around the area.
