On Thursday, March 13, the Texas Longhorns faced off against the Texas A&M Aggies in the second round of the SEC tournament.
In a tightly contested game, the Longhorns walked away with a 94-89 double overtime win.
Wade Taylor IV led the Aggies in scoring, finishing with 29 points. Tre Johnson led the way for the Longhorns, finishing with 17.
The teams went back-and-forth in the early stages, with neither team able to create any distance. With the score tied at 15, the Longhorns ended the period on an 18-12 scoring run to take a 33-27 lead into the half.
In the second half, the Aggies regained the advantage from strong shooting by Taylor IV. Their comfort was short lived, though, as the Longhorns got right back in the game with baskets by Chendall Weaver and Johnson.
A scoring run orchestrated by Kadin Shedrick and Tramon Mark helped Texas gain a 62-53 lead with just over eight minutes to play. A&M’s Taylor carried the Aggies back into contention with a strong scoring performance in the second half, and the game was neck-and-neck in the final stages.
With 30 seconds remaining and Texas on top 73-71, A&M’s Henry Coleman III knocked down a physical layup for an and-one play. However, he would miss the free throw that would’ve given the Aggies the lead. After Texas missed a game-winning attempt, the teams went to overtime.
In overtime, the Aggies held a 78-77 lead, and A&M’s Pharrel Payne was fouled. He made one of his two free throws, but Texas’ Shedrick threw down a dunk in the final seconds of the period to force double-OT.
In double overtime, Taylor converted from the line to give the Aggies a momentary lead. However, three-pointers from Johnson and Pope gave Texas an 89-85 lead. After a free throw from each team made it a 90-86 ballgame, A&M’s Jace Carter knocked down a three to bring A&M within one. Shedrick made his free throws to put the Longhorns back up three. Taylor IV missed a three on A&M’s next possession, and the Longhorns escaped with a 94-89 win.
