It’s a day fans of the Grid have been awaiting for years. The first trailer for Tron: Ares is here, a film that has been in the works for over 15 years. That’s even before the release of 2010’s Tron: Legacy, a cult classic in the making that set up a sequel which never happened, and does not appear to be this.
In the first trailer for Ares, it doesn’t look like the new film picks up those Legacy threads at all. Instead, we’re introduced to a new, red grid and, somehow, creations from that plane of existence crossing over into the real world. Here’s your first glimpse at Tron: Ares.
With the film out in October, this is a fairly early look. We’re not surprised the trailer doesn’t give away too much. But you can certainly tell that director Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil) is aiming to bring fans of the franchise not just something new, but something they’ve been dreaming about for decades: a full-on invasion of the Grid into the real world.
Tron: Ares stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Cameron Monaghan, Gillian Anderson, and, of course, Jeff Bridges. It opens October 10.
