Trump tariffs trigger 900 Stellantis layoffs at Michigan, Indiana plants

An estimated 900 Stellantis workers in the U.S. are facing temporary layoffs due to tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. According to the Associated Press, the layoffs are necessary after Stellantis shut down production at facilities in Canada and Mexico in response to the tariffs.

An assembly plant in Windsor, Canada will be shut down for the weeks of April 7 and 14, before resuming operations on April 21. The assembly plant in Toluca, Mexico will be shut down for the rest of the month, starting April 7.

Because of the international production pauses, workers at the Warren and Sterling Heights, Mich. stamping plants will be temporarily laid off. Workers at a pair of plants in Kokomo, Indiana are also facing layoffs.

“We understand that the current environment creates uncertainty,” said Stellantis North American Chief Operating Officer Antonio Filosa in an email to employees. “Be assured that we are very engaged with all of our key stakeholders, including top government leaders, unions, suppliers and dealers in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, as we work to manage and adapt to these changes.”

The number of Michigan workers impacted by the layoffs is unclear. Stellantis says it is monitoring the situation to determine if further steps need to be taken.

The layoffs come after a 25% tariff took effect Thursday on all auto imports. In response to the U.S. tariffs, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a 25% tariff on all U.S. vehicles imported to Canada.
