Tyrese Haliburton suffers right Achilles injury during first quarter of NBA Finals Game 7

OKLAHOMA CITY — Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton suffered a right Achilles injury with about five minutes left in the first quarter of Game 7 of the NBA Finals.

Haliburton, who was playing with a strained right calf, fell without contact as he was attempting to dribble past Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and immediately pounded the court in agony without getting up.

He was first diagnosed with a lower right leg injury until ESPN’s Lisa Salters confirmed the Achilles injury via John Haliburton, Tyrese’s father.

A replay showed his already-injured calf ripple as he fell. Indiana confirmed the injury as a “right lower leg injury” soon after he went down and announced that he would not return.

A non-contact injury, after a strained calf, immediately sparks fears of a torn Achilles, a la Kevin Durant in the 2019 NBA Finals.

Play stopped with 4:55 left in the quarter, and the entire Pacers team surrounded Haliburton before staff lifted him off the court and carried him to the locker room.

He had a towel over his face and struggled toward the dressing room, even with the help of Pacers personnel.

The Oklahoma City Thunder led 18-16 at the time of Haliburton’s departure. Haliburton was off to a great start, connecting on three 3-pointers.

In Game 5 of the 2019 finals, Durant, who was playing for the Golden State Warriors, suffered a similar-looking injury, which ended up being a torn Achilles. He had missed the entire conference finals and finals up until that point with a strained calf.

Haliburton strained his calf in Game 5 of this series but stayed in the game and was able to play in Game 6. He was averaging 14.8 points and 6.8 assists heading into Game 7.

A two-time All-Star and All-NBA selection, Haliburton, 25, could miss the entire upcoming season if the injury is as bad as feared.
