Tyrique George says he and his Chelsea team-mates had to ‘dig deep’ in the Danish capital to secure a 2-1 victory over Copenhagen in our Conference League last-16 first leg.
After a tough opening 45 minutes of football in the Danish capital, the Blues clicked into gear as captain Reece James broke the deadlock with a 25-yard strike in front of the travelling Chelsea supporters.
Enzo Fernandez doubled our advantage later in the second period after Tyrique had played a sweet pass to the Argentine midfielder. And despite a late consolation goal for the hosts, we secured the win.
Speaking after the contest, George explained the importance of remaining patient in the face of tricky opposition and a hostile atmosphere.
‘It was a tough game to be fair,’ the 19-year-old explained. ‘They are a good team so we had to dig deep. It was all about staying positive, especially in the first half. We knew they were good team, but we knew eventually we would get our chances.’
On the atmosphere, George continued: ‘It was quite surreal at the start but once you’re in the game, you just block it out.’
It was Tyrique’s quick thinking that helped the Blues grab a second goal, and the Academy graduate was pleased to help the team score what proved to be the decisive goal of the contest.
‘It was a good goal,’ he said. ‘I just saw Enzo on the edge of the box, so I gave it to him and it was great to help the team.
‘It was about digging deep today. It’s been a good experience trying to get as many minutes as possible.’
