Top Gun and Batman Forever actor Val Kilmer has sadly passed away at age 65, his daughter confirms to the New York Times.

Mercedes Kilmer said her father died from pneumonia on Tuesday in Los Angeles. She also said he’d been diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, but had recovered.

In addition to Top Gun and Batman Forever, Val was known for The Saint, Top Secret!, Willow, The Doors, Real Genius, Tombstone, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Heat, and Top Gun: Maverick. Tom Cruise opened up about their time on screen together while promoting the film, saying “I just want to say that was pretty emotional. I’ve known Val for decades, and for him to come back and play that character… he’s such a powerful actor that he instantly became that character again.”

Tributes have been pouring in for Val, including from filmmaker Michael Mann who told The Hollywood Reporter, “While working with Val on Heat I always marvelled at the range, the brilliant variability within the powerful current of Val’s possessing and expressing character. After so many years of Val battling disease and maintaining his spirit, this is tremendously sad news.”

Actor Josh Brolin also wrote a tribute on Instagram, saying “See ya, pal. I’m going to miss you. You were a smart, challenging, brave, uber-creative firecracker. There’s not a lot left of those. I hope to see you up there in the heavens when I eventually get there. Until then, amazing memories, lovely thoughts. ❤️💔❤️💔❤️💔💎 #valkilmer #marktwain.”
