Voters head to the polls in Supreme Court, state schools superintendent races

Polls are open in Wisconsin with record-spending races for the state Supreme Court and superintendent of Public Instruction at the top of the ballot.

The state Supreme Court race pits conservative Brad Schimel, a Waukesha County judge and former GOP AG endorsed by President Trump, against liberal Susan Crawford, a Dane County judge. The race will determine ideological control of the high court. The winner gets a 10-year term.

In the state superintendent race, education consultant Brittany Kinser of Wauwatosa is trying to unseat incumbent Jill Underly. The winner gets a four-year term.

Wisconsinites will also vote on local referendums and a statewide constitutional amendment.

Republicans, meanwhile, were keeping an eye on northern Wisconsin after a winter storm blew through the area over the weekend.

Local media reported the Hodag Dome in Rhinelander, which is used as a polling place, partially collapsed after a generator failed. Local election officials moved the polling place to the nearby middle school.

RNC Chair Michael Whatley posted on X yesterday that the national party was coordinating with the state GOP on potential impacts and will work with Brad Schimel’s campaign to “ensure that all Wisconsin voters can cast their votes on Tuesday.”

State GOP Executive Director Andrew Iverson said the party’s efforts are focused on “making sure voters are informed and know where their voting location is.”

This morning, Dem Elections Commission Chair Ann Jacobs posted on X a list of six polling sites that had to relocate after the ice storm. Four were in Langlade County, one was in Burnett County and the last was the site in Florence County’s Rhinelander. All three counties are heavily Republican.

Today’s forecast is largely cool but dry across Wisconsin.
