Tron: Legacy was a story about a little guy who lives in a blue world, but now, the Tron is red! Does that mean he’s evil now? In the original Tron movie, the red circuitry colors meant that the program did not care about the users. So why is this fella red? In the upcoming film, Tron: Ares, Jared Leto plays the program Ares, who becomes humanity’s first encounter with AI beings. Clearly, this movie was written before Facebook’s AI chatbots, but nevertheless, he persisted. In the new trailer, Ares races on a freeway and cuts a cop car in half with his futuristic laser— objectively way cooler than getting incorrect answers to questions like other programs I know… The trailer comes just a few days after their CinemaCon presentation, where Leto and OG programmer Jeff Bridges joined together to introduce the next gen. “Well, first off, as a kid I was obsessed with Tron. It was the ‘80s, and the future felt like it was just around the corner. … Tron had action, adventure, spandex — lots of spandex,” Leto shared.
Tron: Ares is a stand-alone sequel to Tron: Legacy and the third installment in the franchise. Those welcoming Leto into the real world include Greta Lee, Evan Peters, and Jodie Turner-Smith. The film makes the big leap from the grid to movie screens on October 10 aka National ‘Greta Lee Is Back’ Day for all who celebrate.
