Steph Curry’s electric 52-point performance against the Grizzlies on Tuesday came with some serious back-end support for the superstar.

It’s been three games since the 37-year-old guard returned to the Warriors lineup after suffering a pelvic contusion against the Raptors 13 days ago. In order to prevent another injury to that area of his body, he’s wearing “a custom-made pad protecting his sore tailbone and pelvic area,” according to Anthony Slater of the Athletic.

That’s certainly one way to describe it, but another way would be to call it a butt pad. Anyone who’s injured their tailbone knows that there’s no real way to protect that part of the body without some sort of cushion or padding going on their butt. It’s a bone at the bottom of a person’s spine, after all, so it’s just the reality of the situation.

As for the logistics of the padding, Danny Emerman of the San Francisco Standard wrote that the pelvic protection is going around his waist to help with lingering discomfort. This is likely distinct from a pair of protective compression shorts. A cursory Google search of “protective tailbone pad” shows an example of this with a pad that’s secured with flexible straps around the waist and thighs. Of course, Curry’s is customized to him, so it’s probably not from the one available for retail called “Azzpadz.”

The Dubs guard told reporters after the game that he would likely have to wear this for the remainder of the season, and that this is not the first time he’s worn padding like this, with the first experience happening during an injury four years ago.

Curry has had a lot of memorable games throughout his career, but given the circumstances in which he dropped this 50-bomb, this performance is certainly his most un-derriere-rated.
