Newly released court documents added further details to the arson attack on the Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence in Harrisburg.
In the attack, which happened around 2 a.m. April 13 and lasted only minutes, a suspect later identified as Cody A. Balmer, 38, of Harrisburg, is accused of scaling a fence south of the mansion, breaking windows in an area identified as a piano room and hurling bottles of gasoline into the house, causing the fire.
Gov. Josh Shapiro and his family were in another part of the residence. They escaped unharmed after being awakened by state police.

Balmer turned himself in to Pennsylvania State Police, admitting he had been “harboring hatred” toward Shapiro and saying he would have beaten the governor “with his hammer” if he had encountered him, according to an affidavit.
How did the suspect access the Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence?
According to an affidavit, the suspect was seen on video footage “surveilling the residence” before climbing over a fence parallel to Geiger Street on the south side of the property.

What was damaged in the governor’s residence?
Most of the damage appeared to be contained to the south end of the mansion in the piano room and dining room. The affidavit describes “significant fire damage” caused by “incendiary devices” identified as Heineken-brand beer bottles filled with gasoline, the broken remnants of which were recovered at the scene.

Balmer has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated arson, burglary, terrorism and related offenses, according to Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo.
